Minutes from October 29th’s ASL Practice Brainstorming Meeting

We will have a meeting once a month to just keep updates and fill in ideas for our social in the future. In our recent meeting on October 29th, we had come up with a few ideas that we want to share with you all.

Five people only showed up.  However, it was a good meeting.  I suggested them about our group name to Open Hands Social. I asked if they have a better idea.  Time will only tell, but right now, we will use Open Hands Social until then. They did have some ideas for our group name, but we had not finished with the group name ideas yet. We hope to continue to that to our next meeting.  I had to move on quickly to other things.

We talked about which days are we good for this gathering social. They apparently is fine with every Wednesday. I am not sure how the others feel about going on Wednesday. We have about 50 people who have an interest in learning ASL.  Maybe some of you may have a bad timing on Wednesday. We are glad to hear what is the best time for all of you, so we can get together at the same time learning ASL and having ASL conversations.  So we decide to keep Wednesday and we also decided to keep the location at Omega.  It will be ongoing for every three weeks at Omega. At the fourth week, we will be going to a different location.

Also, I asked them what do they think about having one day of the week for just Practice only and the other day for ASL conversational only. But we had come up with the idea that the Practice will be the first hour or one hour and half, and then the rest of the night will be just a casual ASL conversational social.  We thought it was a good idea.  The social will start between 5:30 to 6:00 PM, and it will go on until 8:30 to 9 pm. Please fill in what do you think of this idea.

We talked about we should do more things just than inside the bar. We could do something outdoor stuff, like going to Zoo and learn new animal signs. Or we could go to the museum. Or we could get together somewhere, perhaps at someone’s place playing games like Charades, pictionary, or something fun that we can make ASL useful and have fun on weekends. Or something fun and pleasant.  I also had suggested that we should get together for the Silent Dinner.  The Silent Dinner is that we sit around the table in the restaurant, or at someone’s home, and we are not permitted to use voices, we are required to use ASL instead.  They seem to like the idea.

I also mention that I would add Open Hands Social to social networks, such as Facebook, Meetup.com, and Yahoo Group.  That would help to grow at least some to expand our social.  It doesnt hurt to do so.  And it is not hard to sign up and create.  We will let you know how things it goes.

I think that is all we had talked about. It lasts for an hour or an hour and half.  Like I said earlier, it was a good meeting.

Welcome to Open Hands Social

Howdy Everyone,

I am pleased that you have stopped by here. You see something different here. We don’t call ASL Practice any more. Now it will be called Open Hands Social. We will tell you a few things why we decide to change that. But first, we want to tell you why I am doing a blog. You know blogging is very popular in these days. Millions of people write blogs for different reasons.

For me, We feel that we need a blog for Open Hands Social to keep updates on events, how we are doing and get you more involved better. We will share many things to share with you here, such as ASL stories, articles, links, and Deaf culture, and its history. Not only that, but we will give 5 new vocabulary words every month, and you will able to view ME in signing for each vocabulary word on Video right here. How cool is that? Also, I personally will be doing video blogging once in a while, so you can watch and understand what I am saying, just for your own learning experience and practice as if I am talking to you, you know. Of course, it will come with a transcript after the video. There will be few interesting ideas coming up on the blog, but we are not going to tell you yet… just tune in and wait for our future blog updates.

In the meantime, I have added a few links for general purposes, and where you can learn ASL from. Which is the best ASL dictionary to get? And fun videos for your entertainment. It will be going slowly, but, of course, we will send you for an update when we had added something on my blog.

Well enjoy our blog when you get a chance.
