Pepsi’s Bob’s House ad

You know every year, there is a big event for football called SuperBowl.  They always have funny, cool, different ADs during the commericals.  11 months ago, Pepsi wanted to do a commerical that involved with Deafies in it.  It was aired during Pre-Game show. It is called Bob’s House.  It was cool…  It was based on a famous deaf joke/folkfore.

The deaf folkfore about a husband and wife and their house.

YouTube DirektHow the Deaf found their homes

The original story goes here:

The husband and wife were looking for a new home. They went to the Army base area. The base were there but now gone. There were many houses that looked the alike. They looked around and found what they liked. They went in and saw what they liked. They decided to buy that house.

They were very excited on the first day they moved in. They got their stuff moved in. They talked how wonderful to own a home. They was like, “Wow…”

Later that day, the Husband told his Wife that he wanted to go out to the bar and have a few drinks… His wife insisted him to take the bicycle rather than taking the car.  It is safe that way.  He said ok.

He rode the bike all the way to the bar. He drank, and drank, and he proudly pondered about his new home. He was exhilarated. He had a good time and drank some more until he got drunk.

It was very late and it was dark. He walked drunkardly toward to his bike. He tried to stay on the track, but he couldn’t. He kept hitting something on his way.

The guy saw him like that. He felt bad. He asked him if he need ride home. He was too way drunk, and he told him that he is deaf.

Then he said, “Ok, I will drive you home.” The drunk Husband nodded and say “Ok.”

He started driving and it was very dark. The Husband told him where to go… It was his first time, so he was not sure. They tried to find their way to his home. Finally they found the base and entered.

The drunk Husband realized the houses looked alike. The driver said whixch one is your home? He shrugged and was not sure. He was trying to think where it could be… The driver asked him again. He shrugged again. He said he couldn’t remember. He told him that he just moved in today. He didn’t remember the house number.

But he has an idea. He just press the horn, it was enough loud. The driver was very embarrassed and not know what to do. But he saw the lights of the house start to turn on everywhere but saw only one house with no light on.

The husband laughed, and told him that that is my home. He nudged, saying that is my wife, she is deaf. He laughed drunkingly.

Then he took off the car and thanked the driver for the ride.

The driver stayed, unmotioned and in kinda of shock, wondering. He said, “Wow.”

The story goes like this:

Two guys are driving to their friend Bob’s house to watch the Super Bowl. Once they get to Bob’s street, neither knows which house is his. They sit in the car, arguing, until one of them has an idea. He starts laying on the horn, and one by one, the houses light up and dogs start barking.

One house stays dark and quiet: It’s Bob’s.

English v.s. ASL

We would like to share this video with you all. We thought it would be a good lesson for you to watch and learn.  It will show you how to translate from English to ASL.  That guy’s name is Toby.  He teaches ASL. He said that it is very hard to teach how to translate from English to ASL sometimes.  We agree with him.

After you watch both video, we can discuss about it in our next social gathering if you would like to.

Enjoy it.

CODA Brothers

I have read CODA Brothers’ blog from time to time. They are vloggers. Their names are Ben and Andy Olson. They are hilarious. They can be a clown at times. They would make you laugh, learn and sign. You should check their site out some time. Their blog is codabrothers.wordpress.com. Their blog title is “Laugh. Learn. Sign.” It is a really cool blog. They would tell jokes, stories, and experiences of their lives. They won three awards in 2007 that fell in three categories: Best Hearing Ally, Most Funny Blog, and Best Storyteller from Deafread.com.

Let me say something a bit about it. Maybe many of you may not know what CODA is. CODA stands for Children of Deaf Adults. So those brothers are hearing but sign fluently. They have deaf parents. I believe they are currently interpreters.

I just found a good vlog about ASL Lesson 1. I thought you would want to check it out here. May it be overwhelming to you, but you will learn to understand eventually.

Enjoy their Video below:

Halloween Humor: The Cabbie and the Nun

Although the Halloween is over, I still want to share this video with you. It is really funny. If you don’t understand this video, just ask me on Wednesday. I will be glad to tell you the story again.

First, let me say something about that lady. Her name is LaRonna Lupp Zupp. She was born hearing, turned to deaf at the age of 17. She lost her hearing to the result of the side effects of ototoxic medications she took to treat the rare, life-threatning illiness called Toxic Shock Syndrome.

LaRonna wrote a storyblog titled Life Before Deaf, 64 chapters long, on her blog telling how she lost her hearing and how she accept into deafhood journey. I have read pretty much, but not all of them, but I plan to finish her storyblog some time. Now she is a vlogger. Vlogger is Video-blogger. She won the DeafRead.com award for Best Overall Blog. Her blog is The Ear of My Heart.

She tells a joke about The Cabbie and the Nun. It is very funny. You can view the video from youtube below. I couldn’t not able to get the video itself visible right here. I will have to do research to figure how I can do that, though you see the youtube videos on the third column sidebar. It only will work outside of the wordpress content (I mean outside of the posting entries). Well, enjoy and let me know if you understood this video.

Update: I finally got the video embed code work within a plugin installed.

YouTube DirektHalloween Humor: The Cabbie and the Nun

Update: Thanks to Jon. I forgot to add the transcript of that video, excerpted from her vlog link:

A cab driver sees a nun waving for a ride at the side of the street. He stops to pick her up. She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won’t stop staring at her.

She asks him why he is staring. He replies: “I have a something on my mind, but I don’t want to offend you.”

She answers, “When you’re as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I’m sure that there’s nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive. what’s on your mind, my child?”

“Well, I’ve always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.”

She responds without surprise or shock, “Well, let’s see what we can do about that: #1, you have to be single and #2, you must be Catholic.”

The cab driver is very excited and says, “Yes, I’m single and Catholic!

“OK” the nun says. “Pull over.”

The nun fulfills his fantasy with a seriously, wet kiss that would make a hooker blush.

But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts feeling guilty.

“Forgive me,” said the Cabbie, “but I’ve sinned. I must confess; I’m married and I’m Jewish.”

The nun says, “That’s OK. My name is Kevin and I’m going to a Halloween party.”
